This week has been major in New York City thus far, top celebrities attended and celebrated with Karl Lagerfeld as he hosted the Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show showing their Pre-Fall 2015 collection at the Park Avenue Armory. Among the distinguished and poised guests were Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, Alexa Chung, Daphne Guinness, and Julianne Moore wearing the finest of Chanel. x

Charles James: Beyond Fashion | Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta, 2014

Through the years, the Met Gala has served as the most elite fundraising event amongst the A-list society. Two months from now, the event will take place with designers, models, celebrities and well known industry figures in attendance. Each year the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition is celebrated and the exhibit inspires the formal dress of the night. As one of the most exclusive nights of the year, the red carpet is scrutinized for the most fashionable. I’ve compiled a list of visuals of the best dressed women to have attended the “Oscars of the East Coast” over the years. x

NYFW is over and for the first time ever I wasn’t interested to be apart of it. Fashion Week has become a celebrity focused week long event. During the Fall/Winter 2015 shows, it was hard to focus on the runway when your favorite reality stars are front row taking selfies. The designers who’ve worked extremely hard on their collections and the PR agencies who’ve spent months putting together the most awe-inspiring event to showcase these great collections, all for the Kardashian clan to receive the most press and coverage on North West and her tantrums. Why is this acceptable?

I miss when the fashion industry was smaller, when supermodels like Linda Evangelista, Amber Valletta, and Stephanie Seymour dominated. Remember when designers were celebrities? When did it stop being about the clothing and start being about what celebrity will be there. I’m not saying they are ruining Fashion Week, but the overkill is. A-list individuals are making it hard to focus on the fashion. While editors and buyers are trying to connect with a look walking down the runway, how can they pay attention while a toddler is crying her eyes out. Remember when a fashion show was an exclusive thing? Some people should go back to watching shows on TV or streaming live online. With Lincoln Center no longer the home of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I hope to see changes for September.

Besides the conversations about the brutally cold weather this past week, it was all about Kanye West. The man was everywhere. Starting with his overly hyped collaboration with Adidas. To be honest, nothing showcased was flattering and as a young adult I wouldn’t wear any of it. Remember when Kanye presented his line in Paris in 2012? Way better collection if you ask me. NYFW is a joke, and until something changes it will remain a spectacle that I can’t take seriously. Going forward with a career in this industry, I advocate most strongly in favor of the fashion and its designers. Celebrities can be praised at the after parties. x

Nicki Minaj killed it during NYFW, her appearance at Alexander Wang in Alexander Wang was a moment to acknowledge. But she show-stopped in a helluva fur at Marc Jacobs. Well done Onika. x
